He joinedthe Yellowstone Park exploring expeditionand visited the Rocky Mountains in 1871and again in 1873, making numeroussketches of the scenery. The most note-worthy results were his Grand Canon ofthe Yellowstone, and The Chasm of theColorado, -which were purchased by con-gress at $10,000 each, the first of which isundoubtedly the finest landscape paintingproduced in this country.
