THE CONTROL OF THE CIRCULATIONCONTROL OF THE HEART Put your finger upon your pulse and count the numberof times it beats in a minute. Count it again and see ifyou can make it beat faster this tinje than before. Youwill probably find, if you have been sitting still duringyour counting, that it beats just about the same fromminute to minute, and that you cannot of your own willmake it beat faster or slower. Now if you will lie downupon a bench or couch, and breathe very deeply and veryslowly for five or ten minutes, and let some one else countyour pulse, you will find that it is slower than it wasat your first observation. If you take some brisk and vigorous exercise, like run-ning up and down a flight of stairs two or three times, orrunning around the schoolhouse two or three times, youwill find that the heart is beating very much more rapidlyand strongly than at your first observation.
