In 1843 hewas promoted to Chief Justice, which office he re-tained until 1845, when he resigned. Shortly afterwards he became deeply interested inthe building of plank roads in the western portion ofthe State, and in this business lost the greater portionof the property which he had accumulated by yearsof toil and industry. Mr. Ransom became Governor of the State ofMichigan in the fall of 1847, and served during oneterm, performing the duties of the office in a trulystatesmanlike manner.
