Mr. Ehlers is one of a family of seven children,of whom four brothers came to the United States,our subject and a brother, Hans, two years hissenior, starting from Hamburg in a steamer, July22, and landing in New York seven days later, with $13 in his pocket. Ernest M. Ehlerscame direct to Hartford, where a companion of hisboyhood, Andrew Ferguson, was living, by whomhe was employed for a short time. He was nextemployed at the South Manchester reservoir forsome time, at the rate of $50 per year and board,and then went to Worcester, Mass., where heworked for a farmer for $ per day and boardfor two months, at the end of which time he had.
