. Spons' dictionary of engineering, civil, mechanical, military, and naval; with technical terms in French, German, Italian, and Spanish . per box. By this means GUN-CAREIAGE. 1719 several of the pins of the chains are securely held by the whole force of the compressor a a,Fig. 3340 ; and as both parts of the box which clutch them are attached to the carriage, it is onlynecessary to turn the purchase at the rear end of the slides to draw the gun in or out. When eitheroperation is finished, the handle of the compressor is tui-ned, and the inner part, or heel, of thecompressor-levers then performs the work of compressing. Thus one compressor performs the doubleduty of holding the gun on recoil, and of clasping the chains on both sides of the slide togetherwith equal certainty and security ; and this gear being always in place, and out of the way of everyother working part, overcomes one of the difficulties previously experienced in working heavy gunsat sea. Scotts carriage is fitted with two compressors, under the idea—however powerful and strongthe working part may be—it is not safe to depend upon a single part.
