The sampling and estimation of ore in a mine . efer a form of riffle known in the tradeas the Jones sampler, the safest, neatest and most expedi-tious apparatus for cutting down samples that I know of,and one that I have used for several years with perfectsatisfaction. The sampler consists of a series of , ^ in. wide, but instead of being U-shaped, as theordinary riffle, the bottom slopes downwards at an angleof 65° (Fig, 3). The sampler is made up of a series of 12or more riffles of uniform width (Fig. 4), soldered firmly SAMIIIM. AM- KsTIMAIlON OF ORE IN A MINE together so that the spouts are alternately right and left;thus ore that enters the first riffle would be deflected, say,to the right, that which passes the second, to the left, andso on. It is supported on a stand (B) and the metal pans(C) placed under the discharge from the riffles on eitherside (Fig. 3) ; a small shovel with turned-up sides () is provided of the exact width of the riffles. If thesample to be cut down is crushed in a laboratory THE JONES SAMPLER. the sampler shovel can be placed to receive the ore as itdrops out of the jaws of the machine; this crushed ore isthen leveled ofif to a uniform thickness on the shovel andgently emptied across the central axis of the riffles. Shouldthe latter consist of six pairs, then one-half the sample —108— SAMPLING AND ESTIMATION OF ORE IN A MINE will fall in six streams into the right-hand pan, and theremainder in six streams into the pan at the left. Thesample is thus divided into two equal parts, the result of12 cuts in one single operation. The contents of one panis taken for the sample, it matters not which; the other isrejected. The sample is then crushed finer and the op- \ / /^ ? \
