The Farmers Arms at Five Crosses in Carmarthenshire, a meeting place for Rebecca's Daughters. The Rebecca Riots took place between 1839 and 1843 in south and mid Wales. Local farmers and farm workers often dressed as women and set about demolishing toll-gates, which were seen as raising unfair taxes and tolls, endangering the livelihood of tenant farmers for the benefit wealthy and often absent landlords. "Rebecca" would travel the toll road and feign blindness, calling upon "her daughters" to remove an obstacle in her way, the toll gate, and the "daughters" would respond by smashing the tollgate and terrify the toll keeper.
