Carrie Derick (1862-1941), Canadian botanist and geneticist. Derick graduated top of her class in Natural Science from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in 1890. While studying for a Master's degree at McGill in 1891 she worked part time as a botany demonstrator, becoming the first woman to be appointed to McGill's academic staff. In 1905 she was made assistant professor, and in 1912 professor, the first woman in Canada to hold the title. She introduced the first course in genetics and evolution to the university.
