A Water Snowflake (Nymphoides indica) flower in a Bangkok garden
Nymphoides, or floatingheart, is a genus of aquatic flowering plants in the family Menyanthaceae. The genus name refers to their resemblance to the water lily Nymphaea. Nymphoides are aquatic plants with submerged roots and floating leaves that hold the small flowers above the water surface. The species N. indica is known as water snowflake and is sold as aquarium plants in Thailand and other Asian countries. The flowers borne on slender stalks open with the sun in the early morning and wither and die as the sun goes down. Interestingly, I have seen flowers with varying numbers of feathery petals (usually between 5 and 8).
