About two years later, on May 21st, 1832,James Hudson Taylor was born, the first and onlysurviving son of that godly father. But althoughhe seemed to have been given directly for China,in answer to his fathers prayers, all hope of hisultimately becoming a missionary was by degrees 4 50 J. HUDSON TAYLOR. abandoned, on account of an extreme delicacy ofhealth which lasted many years. Surrounded though he was from childhood by all. MR. JAMES TAYLOR. the influences of a truly Christian home, it was notuntil he had reached his sixteenth year that the greatchange took place which permanently altered thewhole of life for young Hudson Taylor. Of the THE POWER OE PRAYER. 51 experiences preceding his conversion we read fromhis own pen :— I had many opportunities in early years oflearning the value of prayer and of the Word ofGod ; for it was the delight of my dear parents topoint out that if there were any such being as GOD,to trust and to obey Him and to be fully given upto His service must of necessity be the best andwisest course both for myself and others. But inspite of these helpful examples and precepts myheart was unchanged.
