Wind-blown sand accumulating around a tree log with tall slanting branch at one end, some way out from Fairhaven, Lytham St Annes, looking south across the low tide channel of the River Ribble towards Southport. The tidal range on the beach varies. A 7 metre high tide covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas to dry out and blow in the wind, as seen here. A high tide approaching 10 metres, in contrast, will flood the beach and reach the coastline (behind the camera), leaving the beach wet at low tide. Tree remains, derived from bank erosion in the upper reaches of the River Ribble, are occasionally washed onto the beach by the high tide. This branch stayed for a few weeks before being washed away.
