During tsunami. Image 4 of 4. Satellite image of the Sri Lankan resort area of Kalutara, during the tsunami flooding of 26 December 2004. The swirling ocean is receding here, leaving hundreds of metres of beach exposed. The ocean was disturbed by a massive undersea earthquake, some 2000 kilometres to the east near Indonesia. The resulting tsunamis hit coastlines around the Indian Ocean as a series of surges oscillating in and out over the land and killing over 150,000. At least two surges struck Kalatura, the second one causing most destruction. Quickbird satellite image. For this coast before and during the tsunami, see images E275/042-045.
