Petersburg, a handsome andflourishing city and port of entryI of Dinwiddle county, Virginia, onthe right or S. bank of the Ap-pomattox river, at the crossing ofthe Great Southern railroad, 22^f miles S. from Richmond, and tenmiles from the James river at city point. Lat. 37° 14 N., Ion. 77°20 W. It is the third town of Virginia in respect to population,and possesses extensive facilities for business. Vessels of 100 tonsascend the river to the town, and those of larger size to Walthamslanding, six miles below. The South Side railroad has its easternterminus at this place, and the Appomatox railroad connects it withCity Point, at the rarouth of the river.
