St Marys the Virgin, Little Hormead

This small church, beautifully situated, was built in the 11th/12th centuries. It is no longer required for regular worship and it is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. A priest was recorded here in the Domesday Book, when Hormead (no 'Great' or 'Little') had 550 inhabitants. The church has one remarkable feature, its original 12th century wooden north door with its original decorative metal strap work including a dragon and a bird and rough-headed nails. In 1925 the entrance was blocked and the door preserved inside. The 12th century chancel arch has a coat of arms of Charles I dated 1660 hanging over it, indicating royalist sympathies at the time of the civil war.
