The Pitt Press, Cambridge

The Pitt Press, now the Cambridge University Press, CUP, was founded in 1534 making it the world’s oldest publishing house. It is owned by Cambridge University and publishes academic books under the direction of a board, originally the Curators, now the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press. It is known for its publication of the Bible from 1591 to this day. CUP has published the works of many of the greatest minds including John Milton, Isaac Newton, Einstein, Rutherford, Bertrand Russell and Stephen Hawking. Its original site was close to the Market Place in the centre of Cambridge where the Cambridge University Press bookshop now stands. The Pitt Press building was completed in 1832 using funds that remained in surplus after the statue to William Pitt had been commissioned from public donation. The central tower of the building is beautifully ornamental and features the finest oriel window in Cambridge. The picture was drawn and engraved by J and H S Storer.
