This is a real situation. Image not to be used in a defamatory context. Home care. Nurse preparing to insert a cannula into the arm of a 94-year-old patient with chronic lung disease (fibrosing alveolitis). A cannula is a combination of a hollow needle with a tube. The needle enables the tube to be inserted into a patient's vein. Once inserted, the needle is removed leaving the tube in place. This allows drugs to be fed directly into the patient's blood stream through the tube. Here it is being used to administer a blood transfusion.
