It is said that 376 small monasterieswere doomed ; of these 123 escaped immediatedissolution. Throughout 1535 and the succeedingfive years, the work of suppression was carriedon. During that time the monks foresaw thatultimately they were doomed, and had time tosell or hide their choicest possessions before theCommissioners appeared to claim them. Thenno doubt many valuable manuscripts and paperswere destroyed, or else either hidden or removedout of the country. In several places some of these buried treasureshave come to light after being concealed for along time.
