The statue of King Kamehameha I is draped with 30-foot-long plumeria flower leis for a state holiday, Kamehameha Day, celebrated annually on June 11th in the Pacific Ocean islands of Hawaii. Called Kamehameha the Great, he conquered the Hawaiian Islands and formally established the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1810, which later became the 50th state of the USA. The bronze statue with gold-leaf accents was unveiled in downtown Honolulu on the island of Oahu in 1883 and is the work of American sculptor Thomas Ridgeway Gould. The statue stands in front of the Judiciary Building.
