An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Sir James Dewar (1842–1923) and an illustration of liquid air. Dewar was a Scottish chemist and physicist. He is best known for his invention of the vacuum flask, which he used in conjunction with research into the liquefaction of gases. His work on the liquefaction of the so-called permanent gases included research at temperatures approaching absolute zero. In 1884 at the Royal Institution he illustrated for the first time in public the liquefaction of oxygen and air.

An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Sir James Dewar FRS FRSE (1842–1923) and an illustration of liquid air. Dewar was a Scottish chemist and physicist. He is best known for his invention of the vacuum flask, which he used in conjunction with research into the liquefaction of gases. His work on the liquefaction of the so-called permanent gases included research at temperatures approaching absolute zero. In 1884 at the Royal Institution he described the research of Zygmunt Florenty Wróblewski and Karol Olszewski, and illustrated for the first time in public the liquefaction of oxygen and air. Soon afterward, he built a machine from which the liquefied gas could be drawn off through a valve for use as a cooling agent. At about the same time he also obtained oxygen in the solid state. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
