REINFORCEMENTS FOR GIBRALTAR'S APES - Beatrice, aged three, from Tangiers, enjoying the army rations which she draws with the rest of the apes. Beatrice has strong motherly instincts, and has acted as foster-mother to the new babies imported from Tangiers. The British Army authorities take an official interest in the welfare of the apes of Gibraltar, after the population was recently topped up at Winston Churchill's request. Legend has it that if Gibraltar's apes ever leave the rock it will cease to be a British colony. , Churchill, Winston Leonard Spencer
