He was first elected to the Chamber of Deputiesin 1889, but lost his seat in 1898 on account of hisstrenuous advocacy of Captain Dreyfus. In 1906 hewas re-elected for his old constituency. In Pari la-ment, M. Reinach has always remained a privatemember, but as a prominent member of numerouscommittees the value of his work has been recog-nised on all sides. In 1886 M. Reinach was madea Chevalier of the Legion dHonneur. 17 ]. Photo Record Press BARON SIDNEY SONNINO Born 1847, at Alexandria, Egypt, the son of aJewish emigrant from Leghorn. Baron Sonnino hasdevoted practically the whole of his life to foreignaffairs and politics. After graduating in Law at theUniversity of Pisa, he entered the diplomatic diplomacy Baron Sonnino turned to journalism,founding in 1878 and editing La Rassegna Settimanale 18 JEWS AMONG THE ENTENTE LEADERS which four years later became a daily, and laterestablishing the Giornale dItalia. In the meanwhile he had entered the Chamberof Deputies, where he soon specialised in financeand foreign affairs. His election to Parliament wasprefaced by a study of the economic conditions ofSicily, undertaken in co-operation with another Jew,Baron Leopold Franchetti. Baron Sonnino hasalso written on other economic subjects, and onDante as a relaxation. In 1893 he became Minister of Finance, and in thefollowing year Minister of the Treasury. His work
