WASHINGTON DC, United States — Visitors enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom along the Tidal Basin in Washington DC. The annual spectacle of pink and white flowers attracts thousands of tourists and locals alike, who stroll beneath the canopy of Yoshino cherry trees. This springtime tradition marks the peak of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrating the 1912 gift of trees from Japan to the United States.

The Tidal Basin, a partially man-made reservoir between the Potomac River and the Washington Channel in Washington DC, is the centerpiece of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Each spring, the basin's banks, lined with thousands of cherry trees, burst into bloom, creating a stunning display of pink and white blossoms. The majority of these trees are Yoshino cherries (Prunus x yedoensis), known for their clouds of pale pink to white flowers. This annual bloom, typically occurring in late March to early April, draws over million visitors to the nation's capital. The cherry trees were a gift from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo in 1912, symbolizing the friendship between Japan and the United States. The 2-mile path around the Tidal Basin offers views of notable monuments including the Jefferson Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, and the Washington Monument. The National Park Service carefully monitors the cherry blossom progress, providing bloom forecasts and peak bloom dates to help visitors plan their trips to witness this ephemeral spring spectacle.
