The fruit is covered by a pink-red roughly shell and easily removed to expose a layer of sweet, translucent white flesh. It is a tropical and subtropical fruit tree native to southern China, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, and now cultivated in many parts of the world. The lychee has a history of cultivation going back as far as 2000 BC according to records in China. The lychee is cultivated in China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and northern India. South Africa and the United States also cultivate lychee. The lychee is a seasonal and very popular fruits in Bangladesh. It’s found during summer (May-June) in Bangladesh. The best quality of lychee produces in Dinajpur and Rajshahi District. Lychees require seasonal temperature variations for best flowering and fruiting, Warm, humid summers are best for flowering and fruit development, and a certain amount of winter chilling is necessary for flower bud Cool winters with low rainfall are ideal for lychees. Litchis- Bombai, Chaina-3, Chaina-4, and Mozzaffar varieties grown here are especially popular for their tastes. Besides, other varieties like Bedana, Golapi are also cultivated in the district. Fruits mature in 80–112 days, depending on climate, location, and cultivar. Fruits reach up to 5 cm ( in) long and 4 cm ( in) wide, varying in shape from round, to ovoid, to heart-shaped. The thin, tough inedible skin is green when immature, ripening to red or pink-red. The main buyers of the litchis grown in this region come from Dhaka, Barisal, Faridpur, Manikganj, Gopalganj and other districts.
