Carnations and roses have done re- markably well this season, and the cooler weather has been an extra help, but even at $5 and $4 per hundred for No. 1 and No. 2 quality there is not much margin left after the expenses are taken into account. • The wage increase this year is far greater than at any other time in the country's history. Nobody seems to care whether the goose with the golden eggs is killed or is only badly mauled; in more ways than one it may be said that we are leading a hand-to-mouth exist- ence these days. Conscription and community gardens are the two main topics, apart from the wonder aroused by William Fendley, who recently brought to perfection three long benches of fine cauliflowers. These were planted about at Easter and are now ready for the market. Mr. Fend- ley says they are the result of the first attempt to produce cauliflowers under glass in Canada.
