It may be effected by encircling a limb above a bleeding pointwith an Esmarch band or by applying a tourniquet or an improvised tourniquet(Fig. 221). It may also be effected by a clamp. Crile has devised a clamp toeffect temporary closure of the carotid artery. In operations about the headone or both carotids may be closed for a considerable time and bleeding maythus be largely prevented.
