A late 19th Century illustration of Lady Jane Grey (1537-1554), later known as the "Nine Days' Queen", a teenage English noblewoman who claimed the throne of England and Ireland from 10 July until 19 July 1553. Her reign was usurped by Mary I (1516-1558), also known as Mary Tudor, and "Bloody Mary" by her Protestant opponents, who became Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553 until her death in 1558. Lady Jane Grey was executed on 12 February 1554, assisted to the block by Sir Thomas Brydges, the Deputy Lieutenant at the Tower of London.
