Crocodile embryo research. Microphone and computer display of a graph showing the sounds recorded from the embryos in eggs from Nile crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus). Just before hatching, these embryos react to the sounds of the mother and produce high-pitched chirping noises. This induces the mother to dig up the eggs and aid the hatching process. This research is being carried out by Amelie Vergne and Nicolas Mathevon at the Pierrelatte crocodile farm (La Ferme aux Crocodiles) in southern France. Founded in 1994, this tourist attraction and research centre houses some 400 crocodiles. Photographed in 2011.
