Satellite image of Riyadh (upper centre), the capital city of Saudi Arabia, in 1972. North is at top. At this time the population of the city was 500,000 and increasing rapidly. To the south and west of the city is the Wadi (valley) Hanifa (dark green).The dark green areas at bottom right are irrigated fields.
