Building a railroad; a handbook devoted to a new, speedy and economical method of performing every operation from grading right-of-way to ballasting and maintaining track . ay temporary track throughthe cut just made and complete the cut by runningthe American back through on center line on thegrade level, loading into material cars up on the tem-porary track just laid. When the cut is reduced to 5 ft. above gradelevel, the work train can get over to take materialfor construction, and the American can, if desired,go ahead, returning any time later to reduce the cutto grade level. General Remarks The weight of material from the large capacitydippers on ordinary shovels often seriously damagesmaterial cars. This is not true with the smaller dipper on theAmerican, but the American works so fast thatthe maximum yardage handled compares very favor-ably with shovels of much larger rated capacities. A northern road discharged 40 laborers the morn-ing their American Ditcher arrived. The materialwas hard packed sand and clay, every shovelful ofwhich had to be loosened up with picks before themen could touch it with their little shovels. The 15 Building a Railroad. Ditcher Making a Side Hill Cut American dug rightthrough and saved fully$1, in expense inbuilding a fraction over amile of grade, aside fromeliminating the bother ofhaving to board andbunk, hire and fire, thelaborers, keep up their tools, etc. If the cut is on a side-hill, its depth is no objec-tion, as the material canall be cast over if not required for fills or ballast. If short track sections have not been provided, the regular 26 ft. sections can be used in the follow-ing manner: Remove one pair of the bridle or sepa-rator rods from end of the wide gauge section. In com-mencing this operation the machine may standon either the wide or the narrow gauge section, butmust stand on section nearest face of the cut, whichleaves the other section free. The free section islifted by hooking the lifting chain provi
