The breaking of an instrument in a pulp-canal is an exceedingly vexatious accident, as its removal often entailsno inconsiderable amount of labor and the consumption of muchvaluable time. After the orifice of the pulp-canal has been sufficiently enlarged to suitthe purpose, it should be thoroughly cleansed of all debris by the aid of the Donaldson pulp-canal cleansers. 500 OPERATIVE DENTISTRY. Donaldson pulp-canal cleansers (Fig. 560) or the nerve extractors shown inFigs. 561 and 562. Fig. 561. -Drawn FlG. 562. Spring Nerve extractors. Hydrochloric and sulphuric acids are recommended by Calla-han and others for chemically enlarging the pulp-canals. Theseagents in twenty-five to fifty per cent, solutions are conveyedto the canals upon a platinum bristle or probe and carefullyinsinuated. The affinity of these acids for the lime-stls is suchthat the walls of the canals are rapidly softened and softened material is then readily removed with the Donaldsonpulp-canal cleanser. The action of the acid may be limited bysaturating the canals with a solution of sodium bicarbonate. The third step in the operation is the local application of suchtherapeutic agents as possess germicidal, antiseptic, and disin-fectant properties. These agents all have in common the propertyof destroying pathogenic and saprophytic micro-organisms, pre-venting the development of their spores, or of rendering inertor innocuous their waste products.
