Guided line of ice-trekkers ascending the dirty ice slope of the Perito Moreno Glacier terminus, Brazo Rico shoreline, Andes

Argentina's Perito Moreno Glacier is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Icefield, which is shared with Chile. It is also one of only three Patagonian glaciers that is still advancing and growing. It has a length of some 30 km (19 miles) and surface area of some 250 square kilometres (97 square miles). Its terminus is 5 km (3 miles) wide. Here we see eroded rock debris deposited as a spread of ground moraine at the southern side of the terminus rising from the Brazo Rico arm of Lake Argentino. Safari boats, travelling across Brazo Rico, from Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, transfer visitors to the south side of the ice terminus, where, using crampons, they undertake guided tour 'mini-ice treks' or 5 hour 'big ice treks' on the surface of the glacier.
