These ships were anchoredin the East river. The most famous prison ship was the Jersey,anchored in Wallabout bay. All the prisons were filthy and over-crowded. The jailers were very cruel men. Sometimes the prisoners suffered from thirst and for want offood, and very often they were given water and food unfit forhuman beings. Thousands of American soldiers who died from theeffects of the bad food and the filthy, overcrowded prisons were.
