Melnik is officially the smallest town in Bulgaria, famous for tourism, its wine industry and its "sand pyramids". The "sand pyramids" surround Melnik, and are made from a yellow-white mixture of clay and sand. Centuries of erosion by wind, water and sun have sculptured some amazing natural formations.
