The zodiacal armillary instrument, one of the instruments at Tycho Brahe's great observatory at Uraniburg on the island of Hveen, Denmark (now Ven, Sweden). The instrument was a copy of one designed by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy and was used to determine the latitudes and longitudes of stars. Two astronomers were needed for each observation, one sighting a fixed star whose position is known, the other sighting the unknown star. The illustration is from Tycho's book Astronomiae Instauratae Mechanica, published in Wandesburgi in 1598.
