COBA, Mexico — Steps of La Iglesia at Coba, an expansive Mayan site on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula not far from the more famous Tulum ruins. Nestled between two lakes, Coba is estimated to have been home to at least 50,000 residents at its pre-Colombian peak.

The archaeological site of Coba, located in Mexico's Quintana Roo state, is home to the impressive Nohoch Mul pyramid, the tallest Mayan structure in the Yucatan Peninsula. Rising 137 feet (42 meters) above the dense jungle floor, this ancient monument offers a unique glimpse into the grandeur of Mayan civilization. Unlike many other Mayan sites, visitors to Coba can still climb the steep, worn steps of Nohoch Mul, rewarding them with breathtaking views of the surrounding rainforest canopy. The pyramid is the centerpiece of a once-great city that flourished between 500 and 900 AD, boasting a network of elevated stone causeways (sacbeob) that connected various parts of the urban center. Coba's structures are less restored than other popular Mayan sites, lending an air of discovery to the experience.
