The interesting church of Pittington, some five orsix miles from Durham, is said to have been anotherwork of Bishop Pudsey. The fluted and spirally adornedcolumns of the nave (Plate CXLIX) seem to have beeninspired by the earlier work at Durham, but they arecarried out differently. The spirals at Durham arechased into the cylindrical shaft, and do not mar theoutline.
