The story of the battery from its organization to the present time . eercorps, who were constructing a road through a swamp. When we arrivedthere we found that the rebs had a large gun set on a platform aboutfifty yards from where we were in the swamp. Lieutenant Porter said thathe would make an artillery charge. After shelling the woods on the oppo-site side and getting no response, the horses were taken from the gunsand sent in to draw the big gun out. It was drawn off the platform allright, but when it struck the soft ground the team could not move it. Atthat time the rebs opened fire on us, so we were compelled to leave thegun. One Sunday morning the right section was taken out to shell a churchthat stood about one mile from camp. We were on rising ground andabout one-half mile from the church. The first shell struck the steeple; thesecond struck the roof, setting it on fire. The meeting was broken up, andas the rebs poured out we shelled them as far as we could reach them, but the heavy guns from the fort began to open fire on us and drove us JAMES the advance of Generals Stevens, Wright and Willianis at the battle of Secessionville. FIRST LIGHT BATTERY, 1S61—1865 867 The morning of the i6th of June we were called out and, witli the rest o(the troops on the island, tried to capture the fort at Secessionville. TheBattery was placed in front of the fort and about one mile from it. Therewas an open field in front of us, and after we had shelled the fort awhile, Ithink the 8th Michigan charged across this field and over into the fort, but as the men were nearly exhausted from the long run and having nosupport, they were driven out with some loss. The 79th New Yorknext tried to capture the place, but they had no better success than the 8thMichigan and were driven back for the lack of support. The Batterywas then sent up to within 300 yard
