The pre-sent corporation consists of a mayor, 13 aldermen, and36 councillors, under the act :>th and 6th of WilliamIV., cap. 76 ; the borough is divided into five wards ; asheriff is appointed by the council, and the number ofmagistrates i< I.,. The freedom is inherited by theeldest sons of freemen, or acquired by servitude. Thecity first exercised the elective franchise in the 83rd ofEdward I., since which time it lias regularly returned two members to parliament j in 1838, the right of elec-tion was extended to the £10 householders of an en-larged district, which comprises 1853 acres: the sheriffis returning officer. The recorder holds quarterly courts67 7. Corporation Seal. of session for all offences within the city and county ofthe city, not capital ; a court of record takes place everyMonday, for the recovery of debts to any amount, anda sheriffs court occurs monthly. The powers of thecounty debt-court of Worcester, established in 1S47,extend over the registration-districts of Worcester andMartley. The town-hall is a handsome brick building, withquoins, cornices, and ornaments of stone, consist-ing of a centre and two slightly-projecting wings, sur-mounted by a close-panelled parapet, decorated withurns and statues : in the centre is a
