Cairo. 16th-century perspective of the city of Cairo, capital of Egypt. At the time, with a population of several hundred thousand, Cairo was an important economic and cultural centre within the Ottoman Empire, though it was peripheral to the capital Constantinople. The River Nile is flowing from upper right towards the Mediterranean at lower left. The famed Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx, built by the Ancient Egyptians, are at right. This is a 1612 edition of a map first published in volume 1 (1572) of the city atlas 'Civitates orbis terrarum'. This atlas was edited by Georg Braun () and largely engraved by Franz Hogenberg.
