The bear takes a seat CHESTER ZOO, ENGLAND INCREDIBLE IMAGES show the newest arrival at Chester Zoo ? an Andean bear affectionately called ?Obe?. Images show 10 year old Oberon sitting by the water looking almost human before enjoying a refreshing drink and then thrashing about at the water to make sure everyone knows he has arrived. Serving as the inspiration for the beloved worldwide phenomenon Paddington Bear, the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is a remarkable animal. In recent decades, deforestation has caused a dramatic decline in Andean bear populations, and estimates suggest fewer than 18,000 bears now survive in the wild. These images were captured by by photographer Gary Cox (53) in Chester Zoo, England. Gary visited the zoo unaware of the new arrival so he was thrilled to get his shots. ?The photos are of Oberon,called Obe for short, the Andean Bear. He is a brand new addition to Chester Zoo,? said Gary. ?He is a 10-year-old male and has been brought to the zoo as he has been discovered to be the perfect genetic match for their three-year-old female bear, Pacha. ?There are less than 10,000 left in the wild so Chester zoo is hoping this match can help to increase the population ?The Andean bear may be quite familiar as Paddington is based on this particular breed. ?I did not know about this new addition when I visited the zoo on Monday until I saw the article about it. ?I am very lucky I got to capture him and maybe someday there will be some cubs to ENDS
