Steam train from Goathland makes its way through the North York Moors towards Pickering on a bright sunny day in Yorkshire, UK.
The North York Moors is one of the largest national parks in the UK and also one of the largest areas of heather moorland. The heather (Calluna vulgaris) flowers mainly in late summer. The rocks in this region of Yorkshire were formed during the Jurassic geological period. The area is popular for tourists and the main attraction seems to be walking through this rugged and most beautiful of natural landscapes. This photograph was taken in spring near the town of Goathland, Yorkshire. In the distance can be see a steam train operated wholly by volunteers which operates between Pickering in Grosmont, both in Yorkshire. The company responsible for operating the steam railway is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which started operations in 1973. It is a most popular attraction for tourists from both home and abroad.
