The natural history of British insects : explaining them in their several states, with the periods of their transformations, their food, economy, &c together with the history of such minute insects as require investigation by the microscope : the whole illustrated by coloured figures, designed and executed from living specimens . der. The contexture of the Spiders web, and their man-ner of weaving them, have been difcovered by the microfcope. TheSpider is fupplied with a large quantity of glutinous matter withinits body, and five dugs, or teats, for fpinning it into thread. Thisfubftance, when examined accurately, will be found twifted into manycoils, of an agate colour, and which, from its tenacity, may be eafilydrawn out into threads. The five teats are placed near the extremityof its tail; from thefe the aforelaid fubftance proceeds; it adheres toany thing it is prefied againft, and being drawn out, hardens in theair. The Spider can contraft or dilate at pleafure the orifices throughwhich the threads are drawn. The threads unite at a fmall diftancefrom the body, fo that thofe which appear to us fo fine and fingle, arenotwithftanding compofed of five joined together, and thefe are manytimes doubled when the web is in formation. The Spider parallels defign. Sure as Du Moivre, without rule or line. Pope. PLATE.
