Galeria fossil site with scaffolding. Excavations at this site started in 1982. Occupation floors (layers of earth) were discovered. The animal and human fossils at Galeria date back to between 250,000 and 400,000 years. This is one of several fossil sites located in the Sierra de Atapuerca mountains in northern Spain. The extensive discoveries at the Atapuerca sites have led to numerous advancements in the understanding of human evolution. In 2000, Sierra de Atapuerca was made a world heritage site by UNESCO. Photographed in July 2017.
