Coronary angioplasty. Surgical team performing a coronary angioplasty procedure on a 50-year-old man. This procedure opens blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, helping to prevent a heart attack. Monitors (lower centre) are being using to check the patient's heartbeat and other vital signs. In the background, the surgeon and his assistant are carrying out the operation. A catheter (narrow wire) and stent (expandable tube) are inserted into the groin and passed through the body arteries into the heart. Inflation of the catheter's balloon tip expands the stent to widen and strengthen the artery. The X-ray screen (upper right) is guiding the operation.
