Gros (1771-1835) Another important figure of the period was Baron AntoineJean Gros. A pupil of David, he was an artist of greatoriginality, but of little self-confidence. Thus his career wasdivided between works in which he exhibited his own personal-ity, and those in which he, unfortunately, allowed himself tobe biassed by devotion to his masters ideals.
