Of course, a properly arranged steam plant can generally be left for five or six hours with safety, but, if anything does go wrong, the injury to the houses will gen- erally be greater than in a house heated with hot water. The data furnished merely give an idea of the number and size of the pipes used, but a good deal depends on the arrangement, height of returns, etc., and, besides, the sketch sent on does not indicate in all cases the length of the returns. The two houses heated by hot water are side by side, with a common wall be- tween them. They are 18x70, with out- side walls of brick six feet in height. Each house has three 2-inch overhead flow pipes, each of which supplies four lV4-inch returns. So far as the amount of radiation is concerned, it is approxi- mately correct, although it would be well to increase it about ten per cent to maintain 60 degrees with an open-tank system. The principal defect seems to be that for houses of this length the flow and return pipes are both too small, unless the system is under pressure, in which case it should answer for 60 degrees, if the boiler is of sufficient capacity. For each of the houses it would be well to use three 2i/^-inch flow pipes and nine 2-inch returns. If the returns are higher than the top of the heater, a good cir- culation will be secured and at least 60 degrees can be maintained in zero weather. ? The steam-heated houses are joined at right angles like a capital L, with the boiler house in the angle between the houses. One house is 25x70 feet, while the other is 18x70 feet. The wide house has two and one-half feet of glass in the exposed walls. The other has two feet of glass in one wall. All of these houses have three 2-inch flow pipes, with twelve 1%-inch returns. Only nine returns will be required in the wide house and six in the narrow house to maintain 60 degrees in zero weath
