Nicely stacked peat (cruach in Gaelic) Northern Lewis, Scotland

Peat is still widely used for heating in the Outer Hebrides. They cut it in slabs on the moor with a tairsgear where it is left to dry before brought back to the croft and stacked in cruachs rounded at the top and approx 2 meters high.
