Preparing a solution. Water from a wash bottle being used to top up a solution of iron (II) sulphate to the mark engraved in the neck of a volumetric flask. The green colour arises from the transition metal ion present here, in this case iron. The Fe ion is in its +2 (II) oxidation state, and is forming a hydrated complex ion structure with molecules of water. Iron (II) sulphate is used as a food additive and as a dye.
