Four Taku forts guarded the mouth of the river Pei-Ho at the time of the Boxer rebellion in China in 1900. The British sent troops, including those of their ally Japan (pictured here), to clear the way to Tientsin and then to Peking (modern-day Beijing). Tientsin lay between the forts and Peking.
