There was, it is true, the statedpreaching of the Word, together with the regular routine ofcongregational business, but no reaching out, no aggressiveaction : the times were out of joint. The liturgical service introduced by the former pastor wasradically modified by the new incumbent. The General Synodconvened in Trinity Church, May, 1862. Dr. Conrad resignedFebruary i, 1864, to follow a call to Chambersburg, Pa., and. Samuel Laird, D. although a committee of the vestry waited upon him and askedhim to reconsider his action, his decision was declared to befinal, and his resignation went into effect on the ist day ofApril. By special request he preached the first Sunday inApril, and as his last official act he installed the newly-electedofficers. The Rev, Samuel Laird, of Philadelphia, was called to the 31 1Remini6cencc0 vacant pastorate June 30, 1864. He forwarded his letter ofacceptance July 8th, and began his pastoral labors on the istof September. Dr. Lairds first official act was to restore theLiturgy of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania to its place in theregular church service, a pulpit edition of which was providedby the vestry. A committee of ten vestrymen accompaniedhim on his initial round of visitation and introduced him to themembers of the congregation in their respective homes.
